Montessori Academy was founded in 1980 in a single room of the YMCA. It was moved to its current location on South Spring Street in 1988 in historic Hampton Heights. In the year 2000, the Conn family purchased the Academy in order to support and expand the school. An infant/toddler room was added and the elementary house was purchased to house the Upper and Lower Elementary students. Today the school has over 100 students enrolled from ages 8 weeks to 12 years. The Montessori method was established at the turn of the century by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician. Her first school, Casa di Bambini, was established to care for children in the slums of Rome while their parents worked. She developed materials that are hands on and self-correcting. The classroom is the child’s special place. Everything in the classroom is child sized and within their reach. Children get their work and are expected to return the work to its proper place. The materials include practical life, sensorial activities, language, math, science and geography.
